Shal Ngo was bitten by the film bug early, and fondly remembers balancing his family’s video camera on his nine year-old shoulder (it shot directly onto VHS tapes and weighed a ton).
Born and raised in Minneapolis and graduated from NYU in 2008, Shal has kept busy in the narrative, documentary, and commercial worlds, building a large body of work that exemplifies his interest in stylized character-driven storytelling.
His commercial work has awarded him three Addy’s, four Adweek’s Ad of the Day, and a Vimeo Staff Pick.
His narrative and documentary work has premiered at Tribeca Film Festival and SXSW, and he is a Sundance Institute grantee. His latest feature, “The Park,” won Best Director at the Newport Beach Film Festival. He also makes commercials for progressive political clients like Joe Biden and the ACLU.
Shal wants to blur the line between art and entertainment and push his audience to ask deeper questions about their own lives and preconceptions. He splits his time between New York, Los Angeles, and Ho Chi Minh City.
